Local mayors and civic leaders welcomed to Dorset wildlife haven

Civic leaders from across Dorset have visited one of the county’s hidden gems to hear how it provides a haven for local wildlife and offers a wide range of benefits for the community.

Led by the Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr Krissy Stamp, local dignitaries were welcomed to Longham Lakes near Bournemouth last week. They met representatives from Bournemouth Water and South West Lakes Trust, which runs the site, to hear more about its history.

Built in the early 2000s, as well as providing recreational space for groups like canoeists, dog walkers and anglers to enjoy, Longham has built up a reputation as a hotbed for local wildlife, playing host to more than 140 bird species

The group of dignitaries were given a presentation on Longham and the region’s water network at the site’s study centre, including a Q&A session, before seeing the lakes for themselves.

Richard Stanbrook, Bournemouth Water’s Director of Drinking Water Services, said: “It was great to show the civic leaders this wonderful site and to explain what we do for the community in partnership with South West Lakes Trust while supplying clean drinking water to more than 500,000 people.”

James Platts, Chief Executive of South West Lakes Trust, said: “It was an absolute honour to welcome the Mayor and her fellow dignitaries to Longham Lakes. It’s such a special place for people and wildlife – it’s always a pleasure to introduce it to more people.

“We are grateful to Bournemouth Water for enabling us to continue delivering our charitable work here at Longham.”
