Alderney Water Treatment Works

investing to improve your drinking water services

Alderney Water Treatment Works has an amazing history – it’s been serving the people of Bournemouth for over 100 years. We know local people want a reliable source of high quality water, that’s future-proofed against a changing climate and minimises impacts on the environment.

We are transforming Alderney Water Treatment Works to ensure it delivers the highest water quality and can meet the needs of future generations. This is a major transformation and it’s important to get it right, for the people of Bournemouth.

Development of our plans

Careful planning is essential to ensure the solution we put in place will truly meet local needs. Our initial plans included full replacement of the works and replacement with a new ceramic membrane treatment works, using the latest technology to deliver eco-friendly water supplies.

However, on closer review and having spoken to customers, stakeholders and internal teams, we’ve decided to retrofit the works. This will deliver improvement without the carbon cost of rebuilding, as well as the impact on local people and the environment, and the cost.

The new plan

The way forward is to retain some of the existing infrastructure at the treatment works while still incorporating the world-leading technology that will deliver improvements. Sand filters will stay at the site, with ceramic membrane filtration added as an additional treatment. This will make the site more energy-efficient to run and result in improved water quality

Watch the Alderney upgrade unfold with RSE's video

We worked with RSE to upgrade Alderney Water Treatment Works. You can see RSE’s video below for more information on:

  • How an innovative modular approach was used to construct water treatment machinery offsite, then fit it together at the site like giant Lego blocks
  • The benefits this modular system brings for local customers by reducing noise and disruption from the building site
  • The cutting-edge ceramic membranes which will be used to filter water – delivering cleaner water with fewer chemicals
  • How the upgraded works will be greener and more efficient.
