What is WaterFuture?

Every five years, water companies submit their investment plans and proposed charges to the industry regulator Ofwat.

This is known as the Price Review. The next Price Review is in 2019 and it will determine prices for the period 2020-2025.  South West Water refers to this as WaterFuture and for the period 2020-25, this will incorporate Bournemouth Water.

Investment proposals

These are built on assessments of what each company needs to do to meet requirements placed on them and by regulators including the Environment Agency and Drinking Water Inspectorate.

Customer research

Companies carry out research on what customers and stakeholders such as councils and the business community see as priorities and investigate their ‘willingness to pay’.

Each company outlines its vision of the challenges it faces and its priorities before submitting a Business Plan including its own ideas to improve customer services and protect the environment. Ofwat studies these and the effect on charges before issuing its Draft and Final Determination of each company’s plan which sets price limits over the five years.

It is important to remember funds for investment do not come through central or local government. Every company must finance its investment proposals with revenue from customers and by attracting large scale investors such as pension funds and banks.

WaterFuture 2020-2025

In September 2018, South West Water will be submitting its Business Plan 2020-2025 to the industry regulator Ofwat, which will determine prices for 2020-2025.  South West Water’s Business Plan will incorporate Bournemouth Water

To inform the Business Plan, work has started on updating our vision to 2045, known as our 25 Year Future Outlook.  This will be based on what customers have told us are their priorities.  When we publish our updated 25 Year Future Outlook, we will be looking for your views on our proposals.

We are in the early stages of our business plan process but we will keep updating the WaterFuture website to keep you informed on how we are progressing and for you to have your say.

WaterFuture Panel

Ahead of the last Price Review and under guidance from Ofwat every water company in the UK has created a 'Customer Challenge Panel'.  

Each panel is independently chaired and made up of consumer representatives, customer and community stakeholders, and those who represent a particular segment of society. 

Their job is to make sure that a water company's business plan reflects a "sound understanding and reasonable balance" of its customers' views. The Panel also has to check that the company's proposals for delivering the plan are economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. The Panel's Terms of Reference can be found here.

South West Water's Customer Challenge Panel, which now includes Bournemouth Water, will continue to be known as the WaterFuture Customer Panel.

Proposals & Choices Customer feedback - £2 donation to WaterAid: Terms and conditions

  • We will donate £2 to WaterAid for every South West Water/Bournemouth Water customer* who provides feedback on our Proposals & Choices via our on-line survey, email or letter. (One £2 donation per household)
  • Customers must supply their postcode within their feedback
  • The consultation period and entry to the survey is from 5 March to 30April 2018
  • There will be a maximum company donation of £10,000

South West Water will process any personal data received from entrants in connection with this survey in accordance with South West Water's Privacy and Cookies

South West Water reserves the right in its absolute discretion to cancel the promotion without prior notice in the event of circumstances arising beyond their control that make it necessary to do so.

This survey is governed by the laws of England and Wales. The promoter is South West Water Limited, Peninsula House, Rydon Lane, Exeter, EX2 7HR.

*To complete the survey you must live in a property that receives water and / or wastewater services from South West Water or Bournemouth Water but you do not have to be the bill payer. Every person aged over 16 living in a property can complete the survey individually, but each individual can only complete it once.  The donation of £2 will be per household regardless of the number of surveys submitted.
